CHAPTER 4:

THE RHYMING RIDDLE

“ Captain Patch wrote a  poem-!!"  David uttered in  amazement.

“Does anyone  remember the  poem ?” asked Carrie.

“Sure,” said Mr. Lomber, taking a big book off the shelf. “ In fact, I have it here, in this book.  This  is the  history of  the area around 'The Treasured Inn,' and the poem  is written in it.”

The children could see that the book was very old.  The pages  were quite worn and torn in spots.

As Mr. Lomber turned the brownish pages of the book, he found a drawing  of Captain Patch.  “ Look here-- this is what he was supposed to have  looked like.”

“Yikes, “ Carrie shouted out. “I sure wouldn’t want to cross paths with him.”

“He  does look  scary, “ Aaron agreed.

Yep, he was that, at least according to legend,” said Mr. Lomber, who then explained that people living at those times were said to   have been very fearful of him.   “No ship along the coast was safe.”

“ That is, according to the legend,”  David reminded everyone.
“Yes, according to the legend,” Mr. Lomber smiled at  David who appeared to be a very attentive boy.

Then he continued, “The legend even says that his ghost roams the caves in the hills close to here.  There have been reports over the years  that people have heard strange noises, sort of  moaning sounds whenever they were in the caves.
